Resident of Hotel Churchill Affordable Apartments Shares His Story
Ysidro used to be homeless, but he is now safe and healthy at the Hotel Churchill.
Built in 1914, Hotel Churchill is located in the eastern part of Downtown San Diego, along the San Diego Trolley line. The renovation of the historic hotel in 2016 created and preserved 72 units of affordable housing for 55 years for individuals with incomes up to 60% of San Diego’s Area Median Income (AMI) and for an additional 10 years for individuals with incomes up to 80% of AMI.
Hotel Churchill residents are identified through the Coordinated Entry System. Homelessness service providers, 211 San Diego and the Homelessness Response Center can help people experiencing homelessness connect to the Coordinated Entry System, which identifies the most appropriate housing option for someone experiencing homelessness based on their needs.
In January, Mayor Todd Gloria signed an executive order to speed up the development of new 100% affordable housing projects to help the most vulnerable among San Diegans find safe housing.
