New Neighborhood Park in Otay Mesa Opens
Mayor Todd Gloria and City Councilmember Vivian Moreno today joined City staff and community members to celebrate the completion of Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park in Otay Mesa – one of five new City parks that will open this fiscal year.
"This long-awaited neighborhood park will provide much-needed green space, recreational opportunities, and a place for neighbors to come together,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “We’re committed to ensuring that every San Diegan has access to great parks, and with five new parks set to open this year, we’re making that vision a reality.”
The $9.5 million project turned an empty field into an approximately 4.8-acre park featuring a basketball court, open lawn areas, two playgrounds, fitness equipment, picnic shelters, a prefabricated restroom facility, security lighting, benches, a park monument sign, new landscaping, on-street parking designated for persons with disabilities and a crosswalk on Riviera Shores Street.
The park’s name – Riviera Del Sol – is represented through its features. Riviera comes from the Mediterranean coastal regions of Spain, Italy and France. The park’s designers created a Mediterranean oasis using palm tree clusters, blue rubber surfacing and sand to symbolize the beach. The park also has a sundial, which was included as a reference to del Sol, meaning “of the sun.”
Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park is one of several major park projects in Council District 8. In September, crews began construction on Beyer Park in San Ysidro. Clay Avenue Mini Park in Logan Heights is nearing completion, while improvements to Egger-South Bay Community Park in Otay Mesa-Nestor and Coral Gate Neighborhood Park in San Ysidro are expected to be completed in 2025.
“I am proud to finally deliver to the residents of Otay Mesa the park they were promised over two decades ago,” said City Councilmember Vivian Moreno. “Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park will provide families 4.9 acres of green space that will positively impact their health and give children a break from their screens. All while benefiting the environment. This achievement reflects years of tireless advocacy from the Otay Mesa community, who have championed this vision for over 20 years.”
Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park is one of five new parks across the city expected to open to the public in fiscal year 2025, while nine existing parks are expected to be improved.
The City’s Parks and Recreation Department manages over 40,000 acres of park assets, including more than 400 parks, 26 miles of shoreline, 60 recreation centers, 15 pools, 13 skate parks and plazas and three golf courses.
