More than 20 Dog Off-Leash Areas Available Throughout the City

Helping pet owners find safe places where their dogs can run and play, the City of San Diego hosted an “Open Dog House” to showcase one of the newest off-leash areas located at Gompers Neighborhood Park in Chollas View. Dozens of community members turned out this past weekend with their four-legged friends to check out the new dog park and participate in the activities and resources available.

Dog owners have more than 20 off-leash areas across the City where they can bring their pets, now including the Gompers park space that was installed in late 2024 on an existing grassy area, comprising approximately 26,000 square feet. There are two pens, one for smaller dogs and one for larger dogs, with double-gated release area. The area also includes signage, benches, trash and recycling receptacles.

According to the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, dog off-leash areas promote positive activity at parks and create a sense of community among users.

Over the last five years, the City of San Diego has worked to expand access for pet owners, with the addition of seven new off-leash park locations for dogs. These facilities provide a safe space for dogs to play and exercise; they are also the only City park spaces where dogs are permitted to be off leash. Dog owners can be cited for allowing their pets off-leash outside of the designated areas or for not picking up after their pet.
