Mayor Gloria Elected 2nd Vice President of U.S. Conference of Mayors
Mayor on Track to Assume Top Leadership of Organization in 2026
The membership of the United States Conference of Mayors today elected San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria to serve as the organization’s second vice president, the third-highest leadership position in the organization’s hierarchy, at the group’s annual meeting in Kansas City.
After serving in this position from through June 2025, Mayor Gloria is expected to serve as first vice president through June 2026 before likely being elevated as the 84th President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors for one year.
“I am honored and humbled by this opportunity to serve in these leadership roles during the next three years,” Mayor Gloria said. “I've found the U.S. Conference of Mayors to be a great venue for sharing and developing solutions to cities’ biggest challenges, as well as to cultivate lasting partnerships and mutual support — all of which helps me better serve San Diegans.
“As mayors, we are on the front lines of the everyday challenges facing Americans and working to improve the quality of life of our residents. I will continue to leverage the powerful voice we collectively have as mayors to tackle the biggest issues facing our communities, like high housing costs, homelessness, aging infrastructure, and keeping our communities safe.”
Mayor Gloria will be the first openly gay president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, as well as the first mayor from San Diego to hold the position.
The Conference's leadership consists of mayors chosen by their peers from across the United States to hold positions of president, vice president, and second vice president. Leadership also includes trustees who serve as the governing board, and the Advisory Board, the entry-level body into Conference leadership.
The President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors serves as the chief representative and spokesperson for the organization. Previous U.S. Conference of Mayors presidents include Mitch Landrieu, Richard Daley, Marc Morial, and Antonio Villaraigosa.
Mayor Gloria was elected to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Advisory Board in 2021 and then elected a trustee in 2022. In addition to serving on the Conference’s Executive Committee, Mayor Gloria is the co-chair of the Conference’s LGBTQ Alliance and vice chair for border policy on the Criminal and Social Justice Committee.
The United States Conference of Mayors is the official non-partisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are over 1,400 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.
