San Diego Fire-Rescue Academy Celebrates 100th Graduation

Family and friends of 31 firefighter recruits gathered Thursday evening at the Rock Church in Liberty Station to celebrate their graduation from the 100th Fire Academy, in a ceremony hosted by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD).
This milestone graduating class included a diverse mix of recruits including Marine and Navy veterans, a former professional ballerina and a few legacy firefighters following in their family members’ bootsteps. One recruit welcomed his first child while in the academy!
Like so many before it, this academy class endured over 18 weeks of training and preparation, being pushed physically, mentally and emotionally. They faced flames, mastered hose lines, studied fire behavior and learned to work as a team, supporting each other through exhaustion and doubt.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria addressed the recruits and their loved ones during the ceremony.
“When disaster strikes, whether it’s a fire that started in a garage or a person is having a heart attack, you’re now the rescuers who will arrive when every single second counts.” As mayor, he added, “What I can do, what I will do, is everything in my power to support you so you can do your job and stay safe while keeping us safe.”
While SDFD has been around since 1889, Fire Chief Robert Logan noted that this ceremony marks a special moment.
“100 is of great significance, representing a century, a measure of excellence, a mark of endurance,”
Chief Logan expressed his gratitude for those who have decided to pursue a career in the fire service.
“May you serve with courage, integrity and honor. Stay safe and welcome to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.”
