City of San Diego Encourages Everyone to be Prepared for Wildfires
With a dangerous combination of dry and windy conditions in the forecast — and wildfires currently burning in Los Angeles and neighboring counties — the City of San Diego is reminding residents to have an emergency plan in place. Due to the current weather conditions, the National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Red Flag Warning until Thursday, Jan. 9, at 6 p.m.
“We’ve seen firsthand how wildfires can devastate our communities, which is why preparation is critical,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “I urge all San Diegans to take proactive steps now — create your emergency plans, assemble a supply kit, and stay informed. Being ready today can make all the difference when faced with wildfire danger.”
Now is the time to review your emergency plans, create an emergency supply kit and stay informed. Here are several ways you and your family can be prepare should a fire emergency arise:
- Sign up for Alert San Diego, a countywide regional notification system that sends telephone notifications to residents and businesses within San Diego County impacted by, or in danger of being impacted by, an emergency or disaster. Sign up at readysandiego.org.
- Visit the [sandiego.gov/fire]San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s webpage and download the Ready, Set, Go! guide to developing emergency plans for wildfires. The guide includes checklists and tips on assembling emergency supplies and belongings, planning escape routes and packing emergency items.
- Visit the National Weather Service for the latest information on local warnings and weather conditions.
For your safety during an emergency, it is imperative that you follow the recommendations of public safety personnel. In the event of an evacuation, know your emergency exit routes and leave when you are directed to do so.
