New, Upgraded Community Pool Reopens in Carmel Mountain Ranch

Carmel Valley Pool

On Saturday, Oct. 12, Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and community members celebrated the reopening of the Carmel Mountain Community Pool, which recently received a variety of facility and programmatic upgrades. The aquatic facility, located in the Carmel Mountain Ranch neighborhood, is the City of San Diego’s 15th permanent pool operated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Built in 1996 and owned by the City of San Diego, the Carmel Mountain Community Pool was managed by several leaseholders over the years until programming and operations were transferred to the City in December 2022. After taking over operation of the site, the City closed the facility for approximately 20 months to work on an extensive list of renovations to modernize the swimming pool, deck and surrounding infrastructure and bring the facility up to ADA compliance. Additionally, new programs have been introduced to enhance the overall community experience.

“After years of hard work and collaboration, I’m excited to see Carmel Mountain Ranch residents enjoying this new city pool and taking part in the new programs we’ve introduced,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “We’re investing in new and improved recreational resources like this across our city to make sure all San Diegans have access to quality play and exercise opportunities.”

Some of the work completed on the facility includes the installation of a new domestic water heater, pool heater, venting, pool filters and pump, roof repairs, lead and mold abatement in various parts of the building, ADA upgrades to the restrooms, showers and pool, all new deck equipment, painting, new deck chairs and picnic tables for patrons, installation of a temporary office space, new lighting and vegetation.

"I'm proud to work with City of San Diego staff to reintroduce the Carmel Mountain Community Pool to this community,” said Councilmember von Wilpert. “It is a vital space where families and neighbors can come together to stay active and enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather. This renovation represents our commitment to investing in community resources that improve quality of life and promote wellness for all San Diegans."

The pool provides a variety of aquatics program opportunities for the community, including lap swimming, water fitness, youth swim team, junior water polo and recreational swim. The full schedule of activities, open hours, and admission fees is available on the City Pools webpage

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department’s Aquatics Division is continuously hiring for a variety of positions including pool guards and pool managers, with positions still available at the Carmel Mountain Community Pool. Visit the City’s Aquatics Program for more information about careers in the Aquatics District.

“We are glad to be able to expand our aquatics offerings in the City of San Diego to the Carmel Mountain Ranch neighborhood,” said Nicole McNeil, Assistant Deputy Director for the Parks and Recreation Department, Community Parks II Division. “Not only will the Carmel Mountain Community Pool provide a variety of recreational, fitness, and lifesaving educational opportunities that our Aquatics District is known for, but it will also provide jobs in the community. Come join us!”

Saturday’s celebration included an opening ceremony, safety demonstrations, resource booths, fun activities, and the opportunity to check out the facility. More information about the Carmel Mountain Community Pool can be found on the City's website
