City of San Diego Celebrates Veterans with Limited-Edition Library Card
Honoring those who have served in the Armed Forces, the San Diego Public Library (SDPL) is offering patrons a new veteran-themed library card and programs for kids and adults through the month of November. Library locations will also offer an opportunity for community members to honor the veterans in their lives through a photo project.
All year long, SDPL’s Veterans Resource Center helps connect military veterans and their families to the benefits they may be entitled to. Volunteers also offer support with services including finding employment, health benefits and other essential needs.
“The City of San Diego is committed to supporting our veterans and the San Diego Public Library is a great resource for veterans and their families,” said Library Director Misty Jones. “The library can connect veterans with career help, benefits information, and veteran organizations. SDPL also offers resources for families, including homework help, career development opportunities, literacy programs and free passes to state parks and local museums.”
SDPL’s first commemorative veteran library card incorporates elements of San Diego’s military history and landmarks with a red, white and blue color scheme and the words “Veterans are Welcome at the Library.” San Diego Public Library cards are free to California residents, property owners and men and women serving in the Armed Forces who are stationed within San Diego County.
SDPL locations will offer Veterans Day storytimes throughout November and give out free veteran-themed water bottles, while supplies last. During the month of November, community members are also encouraged to bring photos or create drawings of the veterans and military service members in their lives to be included in library Veterans Day displays.
A full list of resources for veterans and families can be found on the library’s Veteran Resources page. Visit SDPL’s Library Services webpage for more information on how to get a library card.
