City Crews Complete Sunset Cliffs Infrastructure Repairs in One Day

new guardrail at sunset cliffs

A portion of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been reopened to traffic following repairs to a guardrail and walking path.

On Monday, Aug. 5, City crews began urgent work to protect Sunset Cliffs visitors and the surrounding infrastructure from coastal erosion of the bluffs. The impacted area was a section along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard near Guizot Street.

The work included the removal of a deteriorated guardrail and replacement of the guardrail further inland, shifting the walking path, road markings and both travel lanes on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Fencing was also attached to the new guardrail to limit access to the eroded cliff face.

Thanks to the efficient work of City Transportation Department crews, the repairs were completed in just one day.

"This project provides safety and addresses important mobility and access concerns to a key resource for visitors and residents. After identifying the need for this repair, in just one month a multidisciplinary team of traffic engineers and operations staff worked together to ensure Sunset Cliffs remained safe, accessible and open to the public,” said Transportation Director Bethany Bezak. “This project exemplifies our team’s ability to stay nimble and act with urgency to assess, engineer, design and repair critical infrastructure in a very short timeline."

After engineers identified the concern in July, an assessment and timeline were completed that allowed for an expeditious design and installation of a new guardrail.

Along with the repair work, the project included a temporary road closure, removal of the existing guardrail and adding signage, which required coordination among many different staff teams, who were all able to work together quickly and deliver a cost-effective project.
