When you dial 9-1-1, every second counts.
As the Police Department works to quickly respond to emergency situations, it’s important you know three things about dialing 9-1-1.
First, don’t hang up. Calls are answered in the order they come in. If you hang up, a dispatcher must then make time to call you back. Please stay on the line, even if you dialed accidentally.
Second, avoid misdials whenever possible. Lock your cellphone before putting it in your pocket or purse and talk to your children about when to use 9-1-1.
Third, only call 9-1-1 if it’s a life-threatening emergency, or to report a crime in progress. The Police Department has non-emergency lines to assist with other types of situations. You can also file a report online. The San Diego Police non-emergency lines are: (619)-531-2000 or (858) 484-3154.
By following these tips, we can all work together to ensure help is directed where it’s needed most.
